Why Do I Have Neck Pain and What Can an Osteopath Do To Help Me??

Times of stress, poor sleep, injury or just long hours driving or at a desk can all be contributors to having neck pain.

Neck pain may be acute or chronic and it can be a constant presence or it may come and go.

It may be worse in the morning when you get up after not moving during the night, sleeping poorly, or in a bad position. It may be worse after a long day at a desk or driving, or aggravated by stress and tight muscles.

Neck pain can be caused by a variety of issues. These may include, but not be limited to

  • Muscle spasm
  • Disc bulge or prolapse
  • Disc degeneration
  • Arthritis
  • Nerve impingement
  • Bony spurs in the neck
  • Muscle weakness, degeneration
  • Other spinal condition

Neck pain can be sharp or dull, it may come and go, cause stiffness and poor mobility and be present in different parts of the neck – ie, upper neck, lower neck, one side or both sides of the neck.  Neck pain may also cause referral to the shoulder, arm, forearm and hand, as well as the upper back and shoulder blade region.

Osteopaths diagnose and treat patients with neck pain daily. We take a thorough case history, do a full examination, perform special tests and then with your permission of course, treat appropriately. We always explain what we have found with the muscles, joints and the diagnosis of what we believe is happening. We will also explain why it has happened or may be continuing to be happening if it is an ongoing complaint.

Our philosophy and approach to treatment is holistic – we treat not only the area of pain, but also the underlying cause of the pain.  Our treatment in “hands on” and uses many different evidence based techniques to help your pain.

We will also refer you to appropriate specialist, imaging, medication and complementary therapies as required. We will also prescribe rehabilitation, strengthening and stretching program to help the surrounding musculature.
