Postpartum Osteopathy

Postpartum osteopathy

Often, it is thought that being pregnant is one of the hardest physically challenging things a woman can do. No-one really gives a second thought to poor old mum afterwards, once your perfect new baby has arrived.

Mum – move aside, and lets focus on this tiny, gorgeous and totally dependant, warm and cuddly baby. Ah sigh…

But hang on a minute, being pregnant for 40 weeks, then giving birth, either naturally or via C-Section, followed by the breast or bottle feeding every 2-4 hours, as well as the sleep deprivation, settling and carrying the baby is hard work! Let alone still cooking, cleaning, washing and possibly looking after other children too… No wonder your back hurts, as do your neck and shoulders!

We, Melbourne Osteopaths see lots of new mums at St Kilda Osteopathy. Some are new patients and some have seen us through their pregnancy.  And once we have seen them, they wonder what they ever did without us and Osteopathic treatments!

The most common complaints women present to us during the postnatal period include:

  • Lower back pain
  • Sciatica
  • Upper back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Muscle Spasm
  • RSI, ie, repetitive strain injury, commonly in the wrists
  • Headaches
  • Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
  • Dequerveins Tenosynovitis
  • Recovery from pelvic instability
  • Rehabilitation of pelvic floor and abdominal muscles

Osteopathic treatment is all “hands on”, and reflects what you need most in your recovery to help address your pain, muscle spasm or tightness. We will also help educate you on getting back to feeling stronger physically by incorporating and teaching you correct stretches and strength activities. This includes advice and education on lifting, bending and carrying – all which are unavoidable and very necessary when looking after a baby.

As each pregnancy and birthing experience is different, as is each body and it’s medical history and how it presents to us, each treatment is tailored to you and your presenting complaint/s.

Osteopathic treatment involves looking at the muscle and joint systems of the body, as well as how each area of the body are integrated and function together. We aim to minimize your pain and improve your mobility and flexibility to be able to look after yourself and your new bub!

Osteopathic techniques may include massage, joint and muscle articulation, manipulation and mobilization, myofascial release, dry needling, muscle energy release techniques, and rehabilitation. This may be of your lower back, hips, upper back, shoulders, neck, wrists or whatever it is we have deemed to be the cause of your pain and contributing to the ongoing nature of your issue. And one of the main components is the integration of all of these areas and techniques together. This gives you a complete and overall sense of well being and relief.

We are highly experienced in post natal care for your musculoskeletal system and are here to help in lots of ways! If you are in Melbourne East and looking for an Osteopath in Elwood, Prahran, Caulfield, Windsor, Middle Park, Melbourne CBD or any other suburb in South East Melbourne, be in touch to make an appointment or give us a call and we can discuss your case and care to explain how we can support your post natal recovery.
